As the business evolved worldwide, mailing increased, and consequently, tracking a mail becomes a cumbersome task. Hence a better system was in demand to deal with this situation.

On July 1, 1963, the USPS (United States Postal Service) came up with a solution and introduced the ZIP or Postal code system. Nowadays, it is mandatory to use it in all countries worldwide, including the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

We use here a five-digit code like Postal code Riyadh is 11564. THE extended ZIP code of 5 digits is separated by a hyphen and four additional digits for a more precise Saudi National Address location. For example, the Postal code of Turaif is 75311 – 8538.

How to Read a Zip Code?

It is advisable to know about the numbering system to avoid any mistake while sending a parcel. This postal code system has made the mailing life much easier and quicker.

Let see what information a Postal code has, but before you need to know, there are two types of deliveries in Saudi Arabia.

  • Home Delivery
  • Post Office Delivery

Coding Method for Home Delivery

Let say we have a Postal code of Turaif that is 75311;

Here, the First digit represents the Major Area (you can see in the above picture it is in Northern, Jawf Area), then next is for Sector, then Branch, Section, and Block.

or you can define these like;

  • The first digit broader area, which ranges from 1 t0 8
  • The two following digits are the code for the main post office in that region.
  • The last two digits are for small post offices/postal zones in that particular city or surroundings.

Coding Method for PO Box Delivery

It is also 5 digits here in Saudi Arabia, but here if we want to see for PO Box, then the first two digits are for postal zone & the other three for delivery point.

Why 9 Digits Postal Code?

This system was further improved with the increase in population around the world. Now four more digits were added with a hyphen. The purpose of this system was to make it more precise.

For example, the Postal code of my location in Turaif, Saudi Arabia, is 75311 – 8538. Here these last four digits make it more precise for a delivery guy to come to my building.

A Saudi Postal Address, also called a national Address, consist of the following information;

4751 Abu Bakr As Siddiq – Al Yarmuk
Turaif 75311 – 8538
Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

This makes the postal services much easier in the kingdom now as it contains everything that is required like;

  • A Building Number -Street – District
  • A Unit Number “in multi-unit buildings.”
  • The City Name Zipcode – Extended zip code
  • Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Wrap Up

Actually, when I arrived in Turaif and it was tough for me to find my postal code. That’s why you are reading this, and I hope it will help you any other day, if not today.

Also, keep in mind that a city may have more than postal/zip codes. It depends on how big the city is and how many post office branches are there to facilitate.
